Cantenac Brown
History
Château Cantenac Brown is a third Grand Cru Classé in 1855 located in Cantenac, in the heart of the Margaux appellation, the most prestigious in the Médoc. The Castle was founded over 200 years ago by a Scot, John-Lewis Brown. This visionary selects the best terroirs. His work and his high standards were enshrined in 1855 by the ranking that placed Cantenac Brown among the greatest. John-Lewis Brown is a man with a deep awareness of the value of group and family. Team spirit flows in the veins of this Scotsman who is part of the Brown clan of Colstoun, whose motto is: "floreat majestas", "Let the flower bloom", evoking a link with nature but also the desire to see the sown seeds grow. His grandson, a famous naturalist painter, spent his childhood at the castle and found inspiration in his lands, which he depicted and shared with his friends Degas, Manet, Pissaro and Toulouse-Lautrec. An incorrigible socialite, he made Cantenac Brown an artistic centre, at the forefront of Impressionism. A testament to its Scottish ancestry, the property's emblem is its spectacular Tudor-style castle, which makes it the most remarkable property in the Médoc. It seals the Brown clan's Scottish imprint and makes it an eternal story.
The French family Le Lous is now at the head of Château Cantenac Brown. Very committed to the management of the property, Tristan Le Lous, agricultural engineer and passionate about oenology, forms a duo with José Sanfins, inseparable from the modern history of the field. Their meeting was decisive. From his childhood on an island in the Gironde estuary, José Sanfins inherited a deep sense of the value of working the land and respecting nature. He invests himself body and soul in the pursuit of excellence of the property.
The Vineyard
The 75-hectare Cantenac Brown vineyard is spread over the prestigious Margaux and Cantenac plateaus in the heart of the appellation. This plurality of terroirs allows a great richness in the blends and a consistency in quality over several vintages.
