Château du Breuil
History
Domain located in Beaulieu-sur-Layon, in the Layon valley (Anjou), a terroir already noticed in the Middle Ages under the Angevin Princes Plantagenet. As early as the 9th century, monks planted Chenin, a grape variety that flourished over the centuries thanks to the local microclimate until giving birth to the great sweet wines of the region. Château du Breuil, a 19th-century building, has been cultivating this terroir since 1822.
Independent winery of about thirty hectares located in Beaulieu-sur-Layon (Maine-et-Loire), about twenty minutes south of Angers. Conducted in organic agriculture, it produces wines in the Anjou, Anjou Villages, Savennières, Coteaux du Layon, Coteaux du Layon Beaulieu, Crémant de Loire and Rosé d 'Anjou appellations. The estate also offers hospitality (tastings, cellar visits) and guest rooms within the castle.
The Vineyard
Vineyard located on schistous slopes facing south, in Beaulieu-sur-Layon and in the neighboring municipalities of Rochefort-sur-Loire and Savennières, in a climate of oceanic/continental transition (the "Angevin sweetness"). The autumnal morning fog followed by the sun promotes the installation of noble rot (botrytis cinerea), essential for the great sweet trees of Coteaux du Layon. Main grape variety: Chenin (Crémant de Loire, Anjou Blanc, Savennières, Coteaux du Layon). For the reds: Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon (Anjou Rouge, Anjou Villages), as well as two native grape varieties, Black Grolleau and Pineau d 'Aunis. Conduct in organic farming since the 2015 vintage: natural grassing, limited tillage, compost and green manures, maintenance of hedges and walls, manual harvesting plot by plot with sorting in the vineyard.
Certifications
Organic farming (certified FR BIO 10), conducted in organic since the 2015 vintage. Independent winemaker.
