Château Le Rouet
History
Former Templar farmhouse then stagecoach station, the Château is sheltered at the foot of the Colle du Rouët, a red ochre volcanic bar culminating at 560 meters and housing remains of prehistoric habitat. Before the Revolution, the Marquis de V. had vines and olive trees planted there and was already shipping wine to Versailles. The family (Reverdit, Lagane then Savatier) acquired the estate around 1840 — then mainly forest property (maritime pine, cork) — and built the castle in its current form around 1880 (1876 basins, 1898 chapel). After the great Esterel fire of 1927, Lucien Savatier planted vines and peach trees on the fire-retardant trenches, giving birth to the current vineyard. Bottle sales began in 1945 (René Savatier), then developed strongly under Bernard Savatier from 1962, joined in the 1990s by his sons Martin (vineyard, at the origin of the Fréjus appellation) and Matthieu (now at the head of the estate).
Family winery (5 generations) located in Le Muy, in the Var, at the foot of the Esterel massif. Château du Rouët produces rosé, white and red wines in the Côtes de Provence and Fréjus appellations, marketed under the brands Château du Rouët and Le Rouët (Savatier Selection trade). The estate also offers guest houses and a reception room.
The Vineyard
Vineyard of more than 70 hectares in restanques, located between the gorges of Pennafort and Blavet, in an area classified Natura 2000, surrounded by a remarkable forest heritage (cork oaks, maritime pines, sequoias, cedars). Terroir on permian sandstone substrate covered with rhyolite scree or local alluvium — the archetype of the Terroir de Fréjus (red sandstone, acidic volcanic rock). Four types of soils identified: shallow sandy soils on sandstone rock, deep sandy soils and acids with rolled pebbles (granite/rhyolites), limestone sandy soils in the Paleo-Endre alluvial plain, and clay soils with angular blocks of rhyolite from the rockfalls of the massif. South-facing vines, exposed to the Mistral and the sea breezes of the Argens estuary.
Certifications
Independent family estate, at the origin of the recognition of the Fréjus appellation (Côtes de Provence).
